Since Mandy Small has trouble writing, her teacher suggests that she tell her life story into a tape recorder. Mandy tells about her loving but irresponsible parents, the school bully, the landlady, and Nan, who thinks Mandy's parents aren't fit to look after her. With so much to worry about Mandy fears she might turn into a real fruit and nutcase.
