When Paul Moreaux is thirteen, he discoers that he can fade. One child in each generation of the family has the ability to become invisible at will, and Paul has inherited the gift from his uncle. The possibilities seem limitless, but soon Paul is seeing things it would be better not to see and learning things it would be better not to know.
